PLANS have been put in place for the first-ever civic reception for Irish Olympic athletes in Dublin following a record performance by Team Ireland at the Paris Olympics this summer.
At the time of publication, the Irish team is bringing home seven medals in total, including four gold medals, and sit 13th in the medals table ahead of countries such as Sweden, Spain and Brazil.
This year also marks 100 years of Irish participation in the Olympic Games after the tricolour was first flown at the 1924 games, also in Paris.
The public reception is set for 12.30pm on Monday, August 12, on O’Connell Street, Dublin, in front of the GPO. This event is fully free to the public and everyone is welcome to attend.
Entertainment for the crowd will include Block Rockin’ Beats DJ Dec Pierce to get the crowd going before the Irish team takes to the stage.
“We’ve all enjoyed watching the Irish Athletes do us proud in Paris,” said the Lord Mayor of Dublin James Geoghegan.
“Now is our chance to tell them in person just how proud we are of them. I have no doubt their efforts will have inspired lots of girls and boys all over the city and country to try and be like them someday.”
Team Ireland Chef de Mission, Gavin Noble, said: “Over the past few weeks our athletes have performed outstandingly, and have inspired the nation with their endeavours at the Olympic Games in Paris. We are really proud of each and every one of them.”
