Republic of Ireland soccer star Shane Duffy has been banned from the roads for three years after being convicted of drink-driving.
The former Celtic player, from Derry, pleaded guilty to the offence at Norwich Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
The 32-year-old was arrested after a crash in Hethersett, Norfolk on May 6, in which his Range Rover collided with a parked vehicle.
No-one was injured in the crash, but Duffy was found to be almost three times the legal alcohol limit.
A prosecutor told the court that Duffy, who plays for Norwich City, admitted to officers at the scene that he was drunk.
A defence solicitor said the footballer “offers no excuses and recognises things need to change”.
He added that his client remained at the scene and asked local householders to take the keys to his vehicle and to call the police.
“As a professional sportsman he takes his role and responsibilities in the community seriously,” he said.
Along with being banned from driving for three years, Duffy was also fined £25,000 and ordered he pay costs of £2,085.
