A woman was pushed to the ground and punched in the face by an unknown man in an assault in Derry on Saturday evening.

Police say the incident took place in the Irish Street area in the city’s Waterside at around 8.45pm.

It is the latest assault on a woman in the city after a number of attacks took place in early November.

DUP Alderman Niree McMorris said she was ‘devastated’ to learn of Saturday’s incident.

“Please be careful and vigilant when out at night on your own. Hopefully, this person will be caught and face the full force of the law,” she said.

“Violence against women is not acceptable in our society.”

SDLP Councillor Sean Mooney also condemned the “cowardly attack”, while UUP Alderman Darren Guy added that “any type of attack on a woman is totally and utterly wrong”.

“We need to educate young boys in our homes and in our schools that violence against women is utterly shameful,” he said.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the attack or who may have CCTV footage to contact them on 101, quoting reference 1561 of 28/12/24.
