The family of suspected murder victim John George have provided the PSNI with a social media message that appears to identify the killer.
The 37-year-old, also known as John Hardy, disappeared days before Christmas during a trip to Spain.
His family believe he was shot dead.
It emerged on Monday that Interpol has been asked to help Spanish police with their investigation.
His father Billy George last week confronted the man he believes fired the shots that claimed his son’s life.
It is understood the suspect was later interviewed by Spanish police and subsequently released.
In a fresh development a lawyer acting for the George family has forwarded a social media message to police that may cast fresh light on who was responsible for the murder.
It is understood the message was initially sent by a relative of a man suspected of involvement in the disappearance and murder of Mr George.
Kevin Winters, of KRW Law, says he is continuing to liaise with the PSNI.
“We are communicating with PSNI on following up leads with potential witnesses living here,” he said.
“Specifically, we have asked police to investigate a new line of inquiry pointing the possible identity of a suspect.”
Relatives of Mr George have been searching the area around Cabo Roig beach, near Alicante, where he was last seen.
It has been reported that another suspect in the case fled Spain last week while a third is believed to have travelled to Thailand last month.
In an emotional plea on Monday, Mr George’s father Billy pleaded for the return of his son’s body.
“Why won’t you just give the body up?” he asked.
“I have said it before and I’ll say it again, I have never begged for anything in my life but if you want me to get on my hands and knees I will beg, just give me John’s body.”
In a social media post Mr George also spoke about the distress suffered by his family.
“If you have a conscience, just give me the body, just give me something,” he said.
“This is just a living nightmare for me and his mother, his brothers and sisters and his family.
“Whatever it was, whatever went wrong, just give me the body, please, please, please.”
The PSNI said it had nothing to add when contacted.
