Residents tell of shock as PSNI attend scene of sudden death of child in west Belfast

POLICE have confirmed they are investigating a sudden death in west Belfast, understood to be a toddler.

A single police car was parked outside a flats complex on the Springfield Road on Thursday evening.

Neighbours, who told of their shock, said they believed a child, around three-year’s-old, died following an tragic accident in one of the properties.

On social media earlier on Thursday some residents had asked for prayers that the child would pull through.

One person at the scene said they had been alerted after seeing social media posts.

“It wasn’t until I saw the police car outside I realised it was the flats across the way. If its true its heartbreaking. I don’t know the family but I’m praying for them. It’s just awful. A real tragedy,” she said.

In a statement a PSNI spokesperson confirmed they attended the scene of “a sudden death in the Springfield Road area of west Belfast” adding there was no further information.
