RESIDENTS at a shared apartment building in Coleraine had to be evacuated overnight after a fire which police are treating as arson.

A PSNI spokesperson said the alarm was raised around 8.15pm on Sunday of a fire inside a communal area at an apartment building in the Weavers Court area of the town.

“A number of residents were evacuated as a precaution whilst officers and our colleagues from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene and tackled the blaze,” they said.

“Thankfully, no injuries were reported and residents have since been allowed to return home.”

“We are treating this report as deliberate ignition and extensive damage was caused to the communal area of the property.”

An investigation is underway to determine the full details, who was involved and a motive.

Any witnesses or those with CCTV, doorbell or dash-cam footage that can assist the investigation has been asked to call detectives on 101, quoting reference 1573 for May 26.
