Man arrested as suspicious object found in south Belfast security alert

A man has been arrested in an ongoing security alert in south Belfast.

Bomb disposal teams have been in attendance at Empire Street where residents have been evacuated and police cordons are in place.

The public have been advised to avoid the area.

A man in his 50s has been arrested and remains in police custody.

South Belfast Area Commander, Chief Inspector Mark Conway said: “Following the discovery of a suspicious object in the area, officers have commenced a public safety operation.

“A number of homes have been evacuated and motorists are advised to avoid the area. We thank residents for their understanding as we continue to keep the local community safe.

“One man aged in his 50s has been arrested as part of the investigation and remains in police custody at this time.

“Officers will continue to provide a visible policing presence in the area and an update will be provided in due course.”

Local SDLP Cllr Gary McKeown said it is a ‘worrying time’ for those impacted.

“Concerned about the security alert on Empire Street, and my thoughts are with those who have been evacuated. I’m sure it’s very worrying for everyone affected.

“An emergency support centre has been set up for residents at the Olympia Leisure Centre. Drivers should avoid the area.”

Community Organisation, Greater Village Regeneration Trust, is also providing a space for residents who have been evacuated from their homes.

A spokesperson said: “We are aware that there is a suspected device at Empire Street and that residents are having to leave their homes.

“We have opened up unit 5 in Richview Regeneration Centre for residents to come and have a warm space and have tea and coffee biscuits. Please let any residents and neighbours know.”
