Mourners say farewell to boxing icon at funeral of Gerry Storey Jnr

Former champ turned coach did last Sunday at the age of 63

Mourners have gathered for the funeral of Belfast boxer Gerry Storey Jnr.

The son of legendary boxing coach Gerry Storey Snr and brother of former professional fighter Sam Storey, the 63-year-old died in hospital last Sunday.

Gerry Jnr turned professional after boxing at the 1986 Commonwealth Games, and had previously been a multiple Irish and Ulster champion.

Following his retirement, he joined his father as a coach at Holy Family Golden Gloves in north Belfast.



There, he was “instrumental” in developing the club and training future champions, the County Antrim Board said following his death, adding he “will be missed by all the boxing family”.

Gerry Jnr’s funeral was held on Saturday at St Patrick’s Church in Belfast’s Donegall Street, before a burial at Milltown Cemetery.

Among those in attendance was former professional boxer and world champion, Belfast’s Carl Frampton.

A death notice described Gerry Jnr as the “beloved son of Gerry and the late Belle, much-loved brother of Samuel, Martin, Jacqueline and the late baby Roseanne, Devoted father of Fiona, Samantha, Gerard, Kian, loving grandfather to Thiago, Leonardo, Rihianna and Brandon, devoted uncle to Gerelle, Fionn and Blossom”.
