Belfast: M1 crash leaves five people in hospital

The M1 has been closed in Belfast following a serious crash involving three vehicles.

Emergency services are at the scene with the motorway closed in both directions at junction 2 between Saintfield Road and Stockmans Lane.

Police are at the scene and the road remains closed.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

A spokesperson for the ambulance saervice said: “The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a 999 call at 18:35 on Thursday 23 January following reports of a three-vehicle RTC on M1.

“NIAS despatched one rapid response Paramedic, 1 Advanced , 5 Ambulance Crews and an Ambulance Officer to the incident. Ambulance Control also despatched the HEMS Team to attend by response car.

“Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, five patients were taken by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Hospital.”
