Met Office issues weather warning for ‘freezing fog’ across Northern Ireland

A weather warning for fog has been issued across Northern Ireland.

The yellow alert from the Met Office is in place until 9am on Thursday.

The forecaster warned: “Freezing fog is expected to become more extensive and thicken across Northern Ireland this evening and overnight, with visibility falling to less than 100 m in places.

“Once formed the fog may well persist into Thursday morning. Some icy patches will also develop on untreated surfaces bringing an additional hazard.”

It follows another yellow warning for snow and ice covering parts of counties Antrim, Derry, Fermanagh and Tyrone which is in place until 11am on Thursday, with the forecaster warning snow and ice could lead to disruption in parts.

“Showers of rain and sleet near coasts, and snow inland, will continue to affect the north and west of Northern Ireland this evening, overnight and into Thursday morning,” a Met Office spokesperson said.

“As surfaces fall below freezing, this will lead to some icy stretches on untreated surfaces, while a few cm of fresh snow could affect some areas, mainly places above about 100 metres.”

Police have advised drivers to reduce speed as the cold snap continues to make roads hazardous.

In the Republic, a Met Eireann status orange warning for low temperatures and ice will remain in place for most parts of the country throughout the day.
