A 49-year-old man has been arrested in Derry after crashing into another car and fleeing from police as they attempted to arrest him for shoplifting.

The man was arrested on several offences, including theft and driving offences on Monday afternoon.

Police say they first received a report at around 2.15pm of a man entering a shop on the Rossdowney Road, filling his backpack with goods and making off from the scene in his vehicle.

Officers attended and attempted to stop the vehicle on the Clooney Carriageway where the suspect collided with another person’s car before leaving his own and fleeing from the scene.

He was arrested shortly after officers stopped a taxi in the Crescent Link area.
