Kneecap dominates British Independent Film Awards as movie takes top prize

The film based on Irish language rap group’s rise to fame dominated the BIFAs with 14 nominations

The Kneecap movie has landed the top honour and six other gongs at the British Independent Film Awards.

The Irish language rappers starred alongside Michael Fassbender in the Rich Peppiatt-written and directed Kneecap, a fictionalised, fantastical biopic based on the trio’s headline-grabbing origin story.

Along with Best British Independent Film, the movie also took Best Debut Screenwriter for Rich Peppiatt and Best Joint Lead for bandmates Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin and JJ Ó Dochartaigh.

The winners were announced during a ceremony in London’s Roundhouse on Sunday evening.



Kneecap the group was formed in 2017, with its three members going by the stage names Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí.

The biopic has received positive reviews since it hit cinemas in August, and it is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime.

The comedy is also Ireland’s entry in the Best International Feature Film category for next year’s Oscars.
