The funeral is due to take place this weekend of a man synonymous with the boxing world, particularly in north Belfast.

Family and friends are set to be joined by numerous figures from the boxing community on Saturday to say their final farewells to Gerry Storey Jnr (63).

The son of legendary boxing coach Gerry Storey Snr and brother of 1984 Olympian Sam, he died in hospital on Sunday.

A multiple Irish and Ulster champion, he boxed at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh before later turning professional.

He has been remembered as an accomplished boxer and an “instrumental part” of the Holy Family boxing club in the north of the city, coaching alongside his father Gerry Snr.

In a statement, the County Antrim Board said it sends its “deepest condolences to all the Storey family on the sudden and tragic death of Gerry Storey Jnr”.

“Gerry Jnr son of Gerry Snr was an instrumental part of the world-famous Holy Family GG, firstly as a boxer who had done it all and more recently as a coach,” the board said.



“Gerry will be missed by all the boxing family and we keep them all in our thoughts and prayers at this time.”

In a statement on social media, Belfast Boxers said: “Gerry Jnr son of Gerry Snr was an instrumental part of world famous Holy Family GG firstly as a boxer who done it all and more recently as a coach.

“Condolences to all the Storey Family and to everyone at Holy Family Boxing Club from everyone at Belfast Boxers Group.”

Gerry Jnr’s funeral will take place at St Patrick’s Church in Donegall Street, Belfast on Saturday at 10am followed by burial at Milltown Cemetery.
