Detectives seized drugs with a street value of just under £650,000 at Belfast International Airport over four weeks during an operation targeting organised crime gangs.

Four people were charged with importing and supplying cannabis following the seizures.

Members of the PSNI’s Organised Crime Branch led what is described as a “proactive operation” at the airport leading to three seizures over four weeks.

Crime gangs vary their methods used to move drugs into the north so the police are “constantly changing our tactics to deal with this threat,” the PSNI said.

“Some of the seizures were destined for Northern Ireland, while some, we believe, were destined for the Republic of Ireland market,” a spokesman added.

“Throughout the process, there will be exploitation of individuals, whether in the production, supply or consumption of drugs.

“People should be aware there is no such thing as harmless drugs. Someone, somewhere in the process, is likely to have suffered.”

The PSNI is vowing to continue to actively target those responsible for importing and supplying drugs.

“We also, however, rely upon information from the public. With your help, we can focus our efforts on identifying those who make their living by bringing drugs into and onto our streets and neighbourhoods,” the spokesperson said.
