Driver hospitalised after car trapped in water at Co Down beach

Members of the public and emergency services helped a man after finding his car in the water of Ballyholme Beach

A man has been taken to hospital after his car was found in the water at a Co Down beach.

Emergency services attended the scene at Ballyholme Beach near Groomsport on Saturday morning, where members of the public had already been providing assistance.

A spokesperson for Bangor Coastguard Rescue Team said they were tasked along with colleagues in Portaferry to reports of a vehicle trapped in the water.

“The team arrived on scene and the driver was being assisted by members of the public,” they said.

“Coastguard Rescue Officers assessed the casualty whilst others officer entered the water in order to check the vehicle for other occupants.

“Police and Ambulance later arrived on scene and tended to the casualty.”



With the scene handed over to the PSNI, they thanked those who reported the incident and stopped to help.

They also reminded the public to call 999 for any emergency on the coast or at sea, asking for the Coastguard.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police attended the report of a concern for the safety of a man in the Seacliff Road area of Bangor on Saturday morning, December 21.

“One man was taken to hospital by NIAS.”
