As parents prepare their children to start or return to school, it's important to frame education as the doorway to a world of endless possibilities and potential, writes Leona O'Neill...

AS THE summer days – if that's what the hot, humid, sticky, ceaselessly rainy days are still being referred to these days – come to an end, we'll all be gearing up for the familiar back-to-school routine.

Some of us will look to it with dread, having enjoyed the relaxed routine and easier days at home with the kids. Others will be counting down the days until that bell tolls, signalling the return to the classroom after juggling childcare and work all summer.

That's just the parents. The kids will have mixed emotions also.

As parents and guardians, we can use these days as an opportunity to prepare our young learners emotionally for the journey ahead. We can get lost in the whirlwind of school supplies and schedules, but we can also use the time to subtly motivate our kids to embrace education as a gateway to a world of possibilities.

The emotional landscape of a child navigating their way through the education system can be as varied and complex as the subjects they study. This transitional period from the carefree days of summer to the structured routines of the classroom can bring about a rollercoaster of emotions, ranging from excitement and anticipation to anxiety and apprehension. Recognising and addressing these emotions head-on is crucial to ensuring a smooth transition back to school.

Community is key in emotional preparation and to establish a secure and open channel for them throughout the school year. A simple conversation about the upcoming school year can offer a platform for children to voice their concerns and express their expectations.

What are they looking forward to? What are they nervous about? What do they hope is different from last year? What do they love about school? What do they dislike?

Encouraging dialogue empowers children to articulate their emotions, helping them feel heard and understood. This, in turn, lays the foundation for emotional resilience – a quality that will serve them well not only throughout their academic journey but in life beyond the classroom.

Amidst the challenges and uncertainties that each school year may bring, parents and educators have a unique opportunity to instil a genuine love of learning in their kids. This love of learning goes beyond the confines of textbooks and test scores: it's a profound appreciation for the discovery of new ideas, the thrill of mastering new skills, and the joy of unravelling the mysteries of the world. Nurturing this passion requires creating an environment where curiosity is not only welcomed but celebrated.

They say curiosity is the fuel that powers the engine of education. By encouraging children to ask questions, explore interests and think critically, we are helping them develop invaluable lifelong skills. Whether it's fostering a fascination for history, kindling a passion for the arts, or igniting an interest in science, each child's unique curiosity can be the guiding light that leads them to their future dream career.

To subtly motivate children about the importance of engaging with education, we must paint a vivid picture of the endless opportunities that lie ahead. Education is not a mere check-list of subjects: it's a passport to a world of boundless prospects.

And, in the middle of all this, we must never underestimate the power of positive reinforcement. Celebrating even the smallest victories – whether it's getting a good mark on a spelling test or mastering a tricky maths concept – can infuse children with a sense of accomplishment and self-worth. These moments of affirmation fuel their motivation and remind them that their efforts are noticed and appreciated.

The return to school is an invitation to embark on a lifelong adventure of learning and growth. Together, as parents, guardians and educators, we can unlock the potential within each child, nurturing their emotional wellbeing and igniting the flames of curiosity that will light their path towards a future filled with endless possibilities.
