Danske Bank Mageean Cup Group A, round three Gaelcholáiste Dhoire 3-14 Our Lady’s & St Patrick’s, Knock 1-12

A STRONG last 20 minutes from Gaelcholáiste Dhoire saw them take their first-ever scalp in the Danske Bank Mageean Cup with victory over Our Lady & St Patrick’s, Knock at Kevin Lynch Park yesterday.

The Dungiven school got off to a great start when Jude Ó Conaire found the Knock net in the 10th minute.

That score was more or less the difference between the sides for most of the first half as Liam Blaney responded to points from several Gaelcholáiste players, the pick of which came from Daire Ó Lochlainn in the 26th minute.

There were five added minutes at the end of the opening half and in that extra time, Dara Pucci grabbed a goal for Knock to put them ahead at 1-6 to 1-5. The half ended with a flurry of scores, two points for each team.

Ó Conaire levelled the tie on the restart, but the ever-dangerous Pucci hit back with a point. The next score, a goal from Emmett Óg McKeever in the 37th minute, lifted the Derry side and from then until the finish they were in control of the scoreboard, even though Blaney fired over his seventh point in reply.

Gaelcholáiste chipped over another couple of points before Jude Ó Conaire’s second goal in the 49th minute made it 3-10 to 1-11.

Pucci responded almost immediately but Gaelcholáiste finished strongly with four points in a row from Cian Ó Dughaill-Ó Cinnéide, Aidan Ó Ceallaigh, Finbarr Ó Muirí and player-of-the-match Ó Conaire to secure the victory.
