Kneecap movie to hit Irish cinemas ‘from Cork to Carrickfergus’ this August

MOVIE distributor Wildcard has announced an official release date for the award-winning Kneecap movie.

The fictionalised biopic of the Belfast Irish language hip-hop trio premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah earlier this year, where it won the NEXT Audience Award and was sold to major international distributors.

Set in west Belfast in 2019, it chronicles how fate brings the trio together and how they then go on to “change the sound of Irish music forever”.

Directed by Rich Peppiatt and starring band members Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí alongside top Irish actor Michael Fassbender, Kneecap will have its Irish premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh in July.

“Everything in the film is slightly exaggerated,” Peppiatt told the Irish News.

“But we always said if we were going to do this film, it would need to be true to who Kneecap are – saying things that no-one has dared to say, not pulling their punches and breaking down some taboos.

Co-produced by Belfast’s Fine Point Films and Mother Tongues Films, the movie is also set to be screened at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York and the Glastonbury Festival next month.

Kneecap will be released in Irish cinemas on August 8.
